Your 11s — the vertical lines between the eyebrows — are among the most common concerns that bring new patients to Rayhana Esthetics. When those lines are visible at rest, when you are not frowning or concentrating at all, patients often wonder if they have missed their window for treatment. Here is the honest answer.
Your 11s come from two strong muscles between your eyebrows: the corrugator supercilii and the procerus. Every time you concentrate, squint, frown, or feel any emotion that draws the brows inward and downward, these muscles contract. Over years of repeating that motion — hundreds of thousands of times — the skin eventually creases along the same fold lines, even when the muscles are at rest.
In the early stages, 11 lines are dynamic wrinkles — they appear when you make an expression and disappear when your face relaxes. This is the easiest stage to treat, and early treatment is the most effective at preventing permanent lines.
Over time, with repeated folding of the same skin, the lines become static wrinkles — visible even when the muscle underneath is not contracting. The skin has been creased so many times that the groove is now present at baseline. This is completely normal and does not mean treatment has failed or is too late. It simply means the skin needs more time to recover.
Botox works by relaxing the overactive corrugator and procerus muscles — stopping the repeated folding that created the lines and keeps them deep. When those muscles take a break, the skin is no longer being actively creased, and it has the opportunity to soften and rebuild collagen over time.
For deeper static lines, this process takes more than one treatment cycle. The skin needs consistent periods of non-folding to gradually smooth out. Most patients with established static 11 lines see meaningful improvement after 2 to 3 treatment cycles, with continued improvement over the following year of consistent treatment.
A well-balanced glabellar treatment keeps your natural expression completely intact. You will still frown, still show concern or concentration — just without the harsh carved lines that make the expression look permanently angry or tired. The goal is to remove the residual crease, not your ability to express yourself.
Regular treatments prevent the lines from getting deeper over time. Patients who begin treatment before lines become static — while they are still dynamic wrinkles — get the most efficient results and often maintain smooth skin with fewer treatment sessions over the long term. Early treatment is not vanity; it is strategy.
If your 11s don't go away on their own, it simply means the muscles have stayed active for too long. Botox can help reset them. Schedule a free consultation with Dr. Firas Abdulmajeed at Rayhana Esthetics in Allison Park, Pittsburgh.
