Neck bands are one of those changes that seem to appear gradually, then suddenly feel very visible. Once you notice the vertical cords running down the front of your neck, it is hard to unsee them. The good news is that for many patients, precisely placed Botox offers meaningful improvement — without surgery, incisions, or recovery time.
Neck bands come from the platysma — a thin, broad sheet of muscle that runs from the chest and shoulders upward across the front of the neck, attaching to the lower face. As we age, the platysma becomes more active, its fibers separate and become more defined, and it begins pulling downward more forcefully. This creates the visible vertical bands in the neck and can contribute to the appearance of early jowling by pulling the lower facial skin downward.
When Botox is placed carefully along the platysma bands, it relaxes the muscle's downward contractile pull. This softens the visible bands, improves the overall appearance of the neck, and can even provide a subtle lift to the jawline by reducing the downward tension on the lower face — an effect often called the Nefertiti lift.
The goal of platysma Botox is not to freeze the neck or eliminate all visible structure. It is to reduce the forceful downward pulling that creates the defined, rope-like bands and contributes to the aged appearance of the neck. With the right technique and appropriate dosing, the neck appears smoother, softer, and more youthful — and the jawline often looks more defined as a bonus.
You will still move your neck completely normally — turn, tilt, and extend without limitation. The treatment only relaxes the superficial platysma muscle, not the deep muscles of the neck.
Most patients begin to notice improvement within a week of treatment, with full results visible at two weeks. Neck Botox typically lasts about 3 to 4 months. Because the platysma is a large, active muscle, regular treatments give the best long-term improvement.
